Selling on Amazon gets complicated fast when a product is ready to ship but the barcode question is still unresolved. If you need a barcode for Amazon products, the right choice depends on how you list the item, whether you use manufacturer barcodes, and how Amazon will track inventory in its system.

That is where many sellers get tripped up. They assume there is one Amazon barcode for every situation. There is not. Amazon does not use one universal retail barcode format for every product type. The format depends on what you sell.

UPC-A is standard for many consumer products sold in the United States. EAN-13 is common in international retail. ISBN applies to books and publishing products. If you are a self-publisher listing printed books, the ISBN is often the key identifier, not a general retail UPC.
